I have 6 Windows Phone apps to show you this week. I tried each of them and they are all well done.

Applause Light

7f54084f-f863-400f-a9f7-2d73f7d950b3[1]

This app displays a big "Applause" button. Hold down this button to hear applause; release the button to stop it. You can choose from Light applause, Standing Ovation, rowdy applause, or Small Crowd. You will probably hear me using this app at the next technical presentation I attend (or that I present at)

My Minutes

1b9081c7-03ec-48f4-ac09-4b64735b62c4[1]

Enter text notes about meetings you attend; A timer lets you record when the meeting  starts and stops, so it can calculate meeting duration. It even lets you assign notes to a particular time segment of the meeting.

World Flag Quiz

2d0b642c-c27f-4e3c-9480-ec4d9ffaa95d[1]

This quiz displays the flag of a country. You need to guess the country that represents. You win by correctly identifying flags and by going through the quiz faster.

Motivational Penguin

d1e411be-087b-4988-9fb8-543009fb80f6[1]

Open the app to see a penguin urging you to "Believe in Yourself!" or "Work hard! Keep fighting!" or "Don't give up your dreams!"
Set the Lock screen to update with one of these Penguin messages and change every hour (or daily or twice daily) so you can get random inspiration throughout the day.

Car Locator

deed0efa-d037-4da7-84aa-9934bfe208e3[1]

Open this app and Save the location of your car; return to the app later for directions where you left your car.

Pandamonium

1d231ecb-3ffe-4785-bcd9-af2a36224557[1]

This is a game in which you move a Panda back and forth along the ground, trying to catch fruit as it falls from the sky. Points for catching fruit; You lose when too much fruit hits the ground.

Roots of Life is a Windows Phone 8 medical application that provides recommendation for ideal body measurements as well as recommended dosages of medicine.

You begin by entering what you know about yourself (or your patience), such as weight, height, and age. The more information you enter, the more and better calculations it can provide. For example, my ideal weight for my height and age is – well, never mind about that (cough, shuffle, look away).

This app is no replacement for advice from a doctor or other health professional, but it does provide the sources on which recommendations are based, which makes it a good starting point for health care or good supplemental information from your health professional.

You can install Roots of Life on your Windows Phone 8 here.

Parent Pathway lets you record information about your child throughout his or her life. You begin by listing vital information, such as name, weight, height about the child and information about you - the child's caregiver. You even list allergies and medication dosages and frequencies. The app will remind you when it is time to give the next dose.

Then, you can add notes every day. This can serve as a journal if you want to remember your thoughts as you watch your child grow. Or you can use it to record daily information about your child's health - There are event categories, such as Medication and Diet to track how your child is doing and what he or she is consuming.

Parent Pathway is free and would be a good app to keep track of your child's health and activities. You can use it to monitory medications, diet, and the effects of these or you can go back and read what you wrote about the child as he or she was growing up.

You can install Parent Pathway from here.

For decades, The Onion has poked fun at the stories in newspapers, TV news, and online news sources. This is the newspaper that has published headlines like the following:

  • Expert On Anteaters Wasted Entire Life Studying Anteaters
  • Powerful ‘His And Hers’ Towel Lobby Stalls Gay Marriage Legislation
  • Zombie Nutritionist Recommends ‘All-Brain Diet’
  • Rotation Of Earth Plunges Entire North American Continent Into Darkness
  • Casual Friday Claims Lives of 13 Nuclear-Waste-Disposal Technicians
  • 450,000 Unsold Earth Day Issues Of Time Trucked To Landfill

The project began as a print newspaper in Madison, WI, before moving to the web, so it’s only natural that a rich client would emerge to automatically deliver daily content to users.

The Onion Windows 8 app automatically refreshes each day with fake news stories for your entertainment.

Download the Onion Windows 8 app here.

Glorious Maximus features cartoon landscapes and cute characters that battle one another to the death, bludgeoning, spearing, and decapitating their enemies.

To score, you must block your enemy’s attacks and attack him without running out of stamina (making you a helpless victim).

This game usually costs money but it is free until June 9. You can install Glorious Maximus here.

Chili’s Restaurants can be found across America and now they are easier to find with the Chili’s Windows Phone app. From your phone, you can now search for the Chili’s closest to your current location or a specific address. You can also view the menu and even place an order directly from your phone. You can share the love by buying a gift card from the app.

Above are the most useful features (to me) but there are a few other features, such as links to Facebook and Twitter, the ability to sign up for a newsletter, and a few videos.

Install the Chili’s phone app at http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/chili/10632f07-b076-46e2-9660-18ac4572d69f.

This Windows 8 app made me smile. Open the app and touch an icon and your PC plays a recording that sounds like you have an emergency in your house, giving you the opportunity to politely hang up on a telemarketer or other annoying-but-difficult-to-get-rid-of caller.

Sounds include Doorbell, Crying Baby, Gunshot, and CSI, which plays a voice saying "Get off the phone. We need to clean the blood out of the carpet." That last one is my favourite.

SpinachTopBanner[1]

This is the second time, I’m going to promote my own apps in this space.

I’ve written a series of games based on a green-haired cartoon character I created named “Spinach Top”.

So far, I’ve published 4 of these games, described below.

Spinach Top Climbs the Sky
In this game, you can use the keyboard arrows or on-screen arrows to make Spinach Top jump from platform to platform until he reaches the smiling sun at the top of the sky. The trick is that the platforms change their speed each time they change direction. Bonus points for getting to the top faster.
Install this game here.

Spinach Top In Space
Spinach Top flies through a meteor shower hunting down little green men in flying saucers who are bent on destroying him. He must also avoid colliding with the meteors.
Install this game here.

Spinach Top Drives Fast
A racing game, in which Spinach Top must navigate a track that spells out his name, while other cars pass him and collide with him.
Install this game here.

Whack-A-Spinach-Top
My take on the classic Whack-A-Mole game. Each time Spinach Top pops out of a hole, touch him to make his head explode and score points.
Install this game here.

I’ve created a web page where you can download all the Spinach top games, plus a few other games at http://spinachtop.azurewebsites.net/.

Hidden Garden is a series of children games apps in which the user is presented with a picture and must find a number of objects hidden in that picture. Examples include butterflies, teacups, and birds. Find all the hidden objects in a picture to advance to the next level which shows a different picture with even more objects hidden. Most of the pictures focus on a fantasy scene, such as fairies in an idyllic garden. The artwork is very well done and so is the music that plays during each game. The game is addictive and looks like a fun puzzle for children.

Pig Out Productions - the makers of these games - typically charge for them, but they are free for a limited time. Most games are available for Windows 8 and other platforms.

You can see a complete list at http://pigoutproductions.com/hidden-garden-series.html

I was invited to host the DevRadio show on Channel 9, so I scheduled an interview with Paul DeCarlo, author of the Cross-Platform Cloud Kit. I’m a big fan of this framework and I’ve used it to author 14 apps for Windows Phone and Windows 8 (which you can find here), so I was excited to talk with him about his framework. Paul shows the kit’s code and explains how it works and how to use it. Click the link below to watch and listen.

I've never found a Windows 8 Twitter client that I like (I've been using the default web site or the in-browser Tweetdeck), but I've been giving Tweetium a try and I like it. It allows you to view your timeline; "Connect" tweets - directed about or to you; "News" tweets - tweets on popular topics; Direct Messages; and each of your Lists. The interface is intuitive and I displays many tweets at once, including attached twitpics.

Today's "News" section features tweets about comedian Harold Ramis, who passed away yesterday, including many by his friends.

My favourite feature is when you click an embedded hyperlink, it launches Internet explorer in two-thirds-screen docked mode, but keeps Tweetium on left third of the screen, so you can still see your tweet and maintain your current position in the Twitter list.

I'm testing the free trial version, but you can upgrade to the full version for $2.99.

Spelling Champion is the first app written by my former colleague Peter Lu. It makes clever use of the voice API, reading a word and a sample sentence using that word; then asking the student to spell the word with his or her keyboard. It keeps track of right answers and offers a second chance if you get it wrong. The words are simple and aimed at beginning readers.

When I first saw the app, my only criticism was a lack of pictures, which I felt would help to draw the interest of a young child. Peter promised to add this in his next release.

There is a free version and a paid ($2.99) version. The paid version includes many more lessons than the free version.

You can download Spelling Champion from this link and you can read details about the app at http://spellingchampionapp.blogspot.com

This week's app is actually a set of apps.

In honor of all the college football bowl games this week and of conference basketball starting, I am featuring a set of college fight song apps created by Wireless Developer, Inc. of East Lansing, MI.

Normally, these apps sell for about $10 each; However, Wireless Developer is working with Microsoft to offer the first 100 downloads of each app for free. Act quickly because each app will return to its original price as soon as 100 people download it.

The links for each app are below. Surprisingly, the company’s hometown team and Big Ten Champions (and my alma mater) Michigan State is not included. Hopefully, this will be corrected soon.

Leap2 is a search tool that allows users to enter a search word or words and submit that search across multiple places simultaneously. Results are returned from Internet search engines as well as a number of social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I was surprised how quickly this cross-domain search was able to return results.

One powerful feature of Leap2 is the ability to set “Alerts”, so that Leap2 searches for something and lets you know when it finds it via an updated tile on the Windows 8 home screen.

You can download Leap2 at aka.ms/Ntmt6u

Some apps are only relevant for a short time and this is one of them. Click the radar icon in the bottom right corner and Where Is Santa sweeps the map of the Earth showing Santa Claus’s current location. On nights other than Christmas Eve, the app will notify you what Santa is doing while at the North Pole.

Click the top-right “My Home” icon and the app will zoom to your home and let you know how long you have to wait for St. Nick’s arrival.

You can download this app at Where is Santa? There is also a Windows Phone version available at Where is Santa?.

Thumbs Up Wine Finder provides information on countless types of wines. The app provides wine reviews, which wines are available in your local supermarket, what wines are appropriate for various meals and occasions and the ability to search by type and price of wine.

This app is ideal for people like me who don’t know a great deal about selecting wine, but it could also add value for those who know wines but are looking for more information or for some ideas of what to buy and server.

The apps/books are all free and each is a science fiction story. I read only the sort story "A Paradox of Distance" but I liked Dr. Huff's style and I plan to read the other two. You can download the apps at the links below:

If you know me, you know I am a big fan of my slow cooker. My slow cooker pot roast recipe was a finalist for DevIntersections top recipe contest in .NET Gurus Can Cook 2nd Edition.

So I was immediately drawn to a Windows 8 app called "A Taste For Slow Cooker".

This app brings together slow cooker recipes, restaurant reviews, and links to purchase crock pots and other slow cookers.

It doesn't appear the app contains any original content but it does pull articles and videos from various sources on the web, such as YouTube and Yelp.

If you aspire to be a better cook, you spend quite a bit of time finding good recipes inside this free app. You can download it at http://aka.ms/slowcookerfoodsTEC.

Road Runner Jump is a simple game in which the classic Looney Tunes speedster runs to his right and jumps from platform to platform. The player gets points by advancing further to the right without falling into the gaps between the platform.

The game could be improved by adding animations or by adding some obstacles or more complex achievements. Still, it is a fun little time-waster that takes almost no time to learn (pressing any key causes Road Runner to jump).

On the plus side, this app is free and contains no ads.

Word Guesser is a simple 2-player Windows 8 game. Player 1 enters a word and player 2 tries to guess the word in as few attempts as possible. The only clues are that the word is between 2 other words in the dictionary. The boundary words are refined with each guess.

This looks like a fun game for children of elementary school age. I can see this game as a good one to hand to kids on a long car trip. It can help to teach both vocabulary (assuming you are providing challenging words) and the concept of a binary search algorithm.

Have you written a Windows 8 app or downloaded an app that you would like to see featured here? I will give preference to apps written in the US Central District after July 1.
