Yesterday, I attended the second Kalamazoo X conference. This year's event featured a great list of speakers, presenting many thought-provoking topics. Ideas came at me so fast, it was tough to keep up. Here are some highlights of the presentations I saw.

"Treating the community like a pile of crap makes it stronger" by Brian Prince

The title of this talk comes from Brian's experience growing up in rural Maine and shoveling manure in the summer months. Manure works better as a fertilizer if you periodically mix it, moving the bottom to the top. The same can be said for user group leadership.
If you are a community leader, plan for a peaceful transition. Identify others who can take over and groom them to do so. Take some time off from the lead role in order to re-energize before coming back.

"Agile+UX: The Great Convergence of User Centered Design and Iterative Development" by John Hwang

John is a web designer and his company is applying agile methodologies to its project. He discussed the challenges of using Agile to manage User Centered Design (UCD) AND User Experience (UX).  The big challenge is that Agile is geared toward making developers more efficient, yet designers are a key part of any web development project. John avoids responding to amy Request for Proposal (RFP) because an RFP forceS you to estimate many tasks that you don't yet know and that are almost certain to change. He emphasized that development and design should be done in parallel and that the feedback loops and iterations of agile should apply to both. Developers and designers should work cooperatively, rather than in conflict.

"How to Work Effectively with a Designer/ How to Work Effectively with a Developer" by Jeff McWherter and Amelia Marschall

Jeff is a developer and Amelia is a designer and the two recently went into business together. They have worked together in the past and they related some of the challenges and lessons learned from their previous collaborations.

"Communication is the key" was a message they reiterated several times during this talk: Ensure that your partner knows what you are doing; verify that it is consistent with what they are doing and that the technology supports it. Developers and designers should strive to learn about the tools and skills of the others. It will help them figure out what they can accomplish.

Mock-ups are a key means for designers to convey information. Jeff said that he often writes business rules in the margins of Amelia's mock-up drawings.

"Does Your Code Tell a Story?" by Alan Stevens

Alan told us we should not bury the lead, so I will tell you his main point now: Beauty is the ultimate defense against complexity.

Alan took the advice of successful novelists and applied their principles to the art of writing code. "The code in our industry is crap", he asserted; then he explained how to make it better: Take chances; write shitty code in your first draft; refactor it several times; and make it clear, simple and obvious before releasing it.

"Unwritten Rules of Resumes" by Jeff Blankenburg

Jeff's major point was that your resume should stand out and distinguish you from other candidates. He advised ncluding a strong first paragraph in a personal letter, accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped return post card with your resume. This will help to establish you in the minds of the hiring personnel. Establish a strong professional network and avoid the temptation to burn bridges when you leave a company.

"Have you hugged your brand today?" by Clovis Bordeaux

Per Clovis, building a brand begins with a mission statement. A critical part of building your brand is getting every employee involved and on the same page, regarding the message you are sending about your company.

Good talk overall. A few contmmes1. Your points are valid but you have a choice of how those points are presented positively or negatively. The overall tone of your talk is more negative but it could easily be flipped and be inspiring. Rather than drawing scenarios that will lead to failure, answer the question of HOW they can be successful. You have some examples of that but if you are truly wanting to change the mindset then that has to be the major focus.2. You are right about the funding game. Too many people play the game of valuation rather than value. I have gotten sucked into it myself.3. Another theme you can expound on (with appropriate credits to me for this ) engineers solve problems, innovators create opportunities . Unfortunately the root of evil here lies in our education system that does everything possible to suppress creativity and does everything possible to turn us into non-thinking functionaries. There is no focus on actually addressing problems or needs. In fact not even being aware of them.4. Write THE book.

I was great hanging out with you and the group Friday night. Thanks again for the ride back to the hotel! BTW, That was an awesome adhoc “Michigan Left” FTW! I feel bad about missing your ActiveRecord talk, but you were up against Jim. As you found out talking to him later, Jim has some really great insights into software estimation in the realm of agile techniques. I hope your AR talk will be at CodeMash so I can finally catch it.This was my first AADODN, and I must say, I was impressed. The crew of contributing UG leaders did a great job in planning. The only issue I found was the five minute buffer between sessions. This didn’t leave much time to talk to the speaker and/or folks between. I understand its tough to cram all the value-add into one day, but the hallway conversations are an important part of these events.Other than that minor tidbit, I was glad I made the drive (or the ride, Joe did the driving I plan on returning to future AADODNs hang with the tribe and get my .Net on!

Dear Kate,Sorry for engaging with your posted text so late, hopefully this will still reach you. Three quick points, the first purely informational in case you aren’t aware of it but probably are. Tim Ingold, Jo Lee, Hayden Lorimer, and Katrín Lund have all been involved in various studies that deal with walking. For example, there was one recently entitled Culture from the Ground which was ESRC project focusing on recreational rambling and hillwalking in Scotland. Culture from the Ground: Walking, Movement and Placemaking, 2004-2006 (see ). This research was designed to reveal the sociality of walking through an ethnographic study of everyday pedestrian movements. They explored how walking binds time and place in people’s experience, relationships and life-histories. Ingold has an insightful paper in the JMC 9 (3): 315-340 in 2004 called Culture from the Ground: The World Perceived Through the Feet. The second point’s a contrastive observation. The first thing that came to mind in reading your short piece about Footpaths was the potentially interesting parallel you have here to approach the tangential issue of urban exploration and spatial restriction, especially through the lens of Free Running or Parkour. This is of course important because you cite de Certeau who is of course writing about movement in the city. But it is also relevant since you mention issues dealing with the politics of access to the countryside which Iain Borden explores so well through his study of how skateboarding subcultures appropriate, contest and manipulate urban space. Finally, a rather asinine question. What about art and walking à la Richard Long?Anyway, best of luck with the research. Sounds fascinating.

. I only remember this because I worked at the hospital, where he was god. (He is mentioned in MASH on TV –”Let’s fix up a good old-fashioned Wangenstein,” says Col. Potter and then explains.) I was required to attend, as no doubt were you. I had to come back from teaching for two days and attend (end of SSII). In the practice the “director of students something or other” told us we were all to stupid to manage this so they had secretaries who would lead us around by colleges. We were to follow the person in front no matter what and the person behind the secretary must follow her of course. He repeated this a few times. At the graduation the person leading our group–college of ed–took a wrong turn and without a beat everyone joyously followed. We had to go back up an aisle, through the lobby and down the right aisle, but she got the wrong one. But at the pit we could just turn and follow. We got an ovation from the several thousand other student/prisoners.I had forgotten this until you mentioned Northrop.

I strongly disagree that lesbian social, health and political issues are ignored by LGBTQ organizations, and especially that they are ignored to any greater extent than those of other sexual minorities within the spectrum, but I’m not going to get any further into this because it REALLY isn’t the point. The point is that your identity is not being actively erased by including others in an umbrella term. You, as an individual, have every right to insist that people not identify you, personally, as queer. No problem with that. But to insist that people not use a perfectly well-established collective term to talk about a group of women, when a) those women to our knowledge never explicitly rejected being included under such an umbrella term and b) at least one commenter indicated that she used the term “queer” because one of the women identifies as bisexual – that is language policing.I’d also like to point out that the person who initially sparked this discussion, by repeatedly insisting on her point throughout the comments, is a transphobic radfem with a well-established web presence (Google her name and see for yourself). Her rejection of the term “queer” is explicitly due to a rejection of trans identities, and has nothing to do with requesting “sensitivity and respect” for the women discussed in this post. 2
