What is it that keeps me coming back to see the same band over and over?

Friday night at Berwyn's Fitzgerald's Night Club, I saw Los Lobos live for at least the fourth time - the third time in the last five years.

Is it their high-energy performance, their excellent musicianship, or their song catalog? For me, it is all of the above.

As always, Los Lobos played a set that spanned blues, ballads, roots rock, and rock & roll. Of course, the band is famous for its Latin rock. The original members met in the heavily Hispanic neighborhoods of East Los Angeles, California, where they bonded over their love of music. Amazingly, most of the original members remain in this group more than five decades after its founding.

Unlike most national acts that play at Fitzgerald's, this show took place on the patio on a warm summer evening. It felt like a small festival, with the band rocking on a stage in the corner, the crowd standing and dancing to the music. The crowd cheered as they saw the musicians walking along the sidewalk to and from the stage, their car, and their dressing room.

They played many of my favourites - "Let's Go," "Don't Worry Baby," "Volver Volver," "I Got Loaded," and an extended version of "Kiko and the Lavender Moon." The band closed with "La Bamba," the song that introduced most of the world to Los Lobos when they recorded the soundtrack to the Richie Valens biopic. This time, they turned it into a medley, mixing in The Rascal's "Good Lovin'." The crowd went wild, singing along before the quintet departed the stage for the final time.

The evening's entertainment should tide me over until the next time I see Los Lobos.
