Macy Gray's greatest success came when she released her debut album "On How Life Is," which included her number 1 single "I Try."
A quarter century later, Gray is celebrating that success with a tour in which she promised to perform every song from that album.
Tuesday evening's performance at the Ramova Theatre in Bridgeport opened with a video showing an animated pre-teen Macy Gray smiling broadly, playing her piano, telling the audience about her dreams, and introducing her real-life self.
After singing a half dozen songs from her later releases, Gray stepped offstage while the band performed an instrumental number. She returned a few minutes later to sing "Why Didn't You Call Me," the opening track of "How Life Is."
Macy sang each song from this album in the same order as the track listing, with one exception. She saved her megahit "I Try" for her encore set, mixing it with some Bob Marley music.
Macy mixed in a couple of cover songs with her compositions, including a tribute to the recently deceased Ozzy Osbourne.
The show closed with another animated video showing Macy as an old woman - still at her piano and still smiling.
The theater was less than full, possibly because word has not yet spread about the newly renovated theater. But those who attended enjoyed an entertaining show.
